Canta, Violino!

“Its nice to see fresh, young musicians carrying on the traditions of Brazilian music. Finn Magill displays a love and authenticity that can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil. His style is playful and light, yet soulful and passionate. Congratulations!” - Airto Moreira

I am so excited to submit this album to the 61st Grammy Awards for the categories:

Best Improvised Jazz Solo

Best Latin Jazz Album

Best World Music Album

Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals

When I moved to Rio de Janeiro in September 2014, I had my butt kicked in my first lesson of choro music with virtuoso mandolin player Luís Barcelos. In those 60 minutes he inspired me to practice hours a day for months on end and before I knew it I was composing choro.

Encouraged by many new musician-friends, a year into it I was writing Brazilian tunes of all sorts: sambas in odd time signatures, jazzy choros and other musical experiments. The music of Canta, Violino! is a collection of all of this music from my earliest days of Brazilian composition in 2014 to the end of 2016. The music is as much by the Brazilian legends Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim as by modern groups like Snarky Puppy and Robert Glasper.
